Beat the Freeze: Here’s Your November 2026 Maintenance Checklist

November is officially “freeze prevention” month for your property. We’re spending this month winterizing outdoor water lines, insulating pipes, and stocking up on winter essentials so the first hard freeze catches nothing off guard.

The first hard freeze of the season has a way of finding every weak spot in a home. A hose left connected, a pipe nobody insulated, a walkway with no salt on it. November is the month to get ahead of all of it, while the work is still easy and the weather is still on your side.

Whether you own a house or live in a condo or co-op, here are your top priorities from our Home Care Hub this November:

This Month’s Checklist: November 2026

Winterize Outdoor Water

Drain and store your garden hoses, and shut off the outdoor water lines. Water left in a hose or an exterior spigot can freeze, expand, and crack the pipe inside your wall, which is one of the most expensive surprises a homeowner can get. If you have a house, locate the interior shutoff valve for each outdoor spigot and close it, then open the outside tap to let the remaining water drain out.

Insulate Pipes Before They Freeze

Check the insulation on any exposed pipes, especially in unheated areas like basements, crawl spaces, and garages. Foam pipe sleeves are cheap and take minutes to install. In a condo or co-op, make sure pipes on outer walls have clear airflow around them so warm air can reach them, and report any drafty utility closets to building management before the cold sets in.

Stock Up on Winter Essentials

Salt, shovels, ice melt. Buy them now, while the shelves are full and the prices are normal. If you have a balcony, grab a bag of pet-safe ice melt for it too, and clear the balcony drains of leaves and debris so melting snow has somewhere to go. Move any sensitive plants indoors before the first frost.

By handling these three things in November, you walk into winter with a home that is ready for whatever the season brings, instead of reacting to it one frozen pipe at a time.
