As the new year begins, many of our clients are thinking about their resolutions and goals for the coming year. If one of their goals is to buy a home in the Bronx, it’s important for them to start preparing now in order to set themselves up for success. As real estate agents in the Bronx, we often recommend the following steps to our clients who are preparing to buy a home:

  1. Determine your budget: Before you start looking at homes, it’s important to have a clear idea of how much you can afford to spend. This will help narrow down your search and focus on properties that are within your price range. You will need to get pre-approved for a mortgage before you start looking at homes so you know exactly how much you can borrow and if you can actually get a mortgage. We can introduce you to experienced mortgage professionals who can help you.
  2. Start saving for a down payment: If you don’t already have a down payment saved up, now is the time to start. A down payment is a lump sum of money that you pay upfront when you buy a home. The amount you need to save will depend on the price of the home you want to buy and the type of mortgage you get. The higher the price of the home and the less you put down, the higher your monthly mortgage payments will be. If you’re considering buying a co-op, note that most buildings have a required minimum down payment, with the average being 20% down.
  3. Work on your credit score: Your credit score is an important factor in determining whether you will be approved for a mortgage and what interest rate you will be offered. If your credit score is not where you want it to be, now is the time to start working on improving it. This may involve paying off debt, avoiding late payments, and disputing any errors on your credit report. We can introduce you to credit professionals who can help you navigate these issues and more.
  4. Start researching neighborhoods: If you’re not already familiar with the Bronx, now is the time to start exploring different neighborhoods and getting a feel for what you like and don’t like. Consider factors like proximity to public transportation, schools, and amenities like parks and shopping. We’ve lived here for years and can help you determine where might be best for you.
  5. Find a real estate agent: Working with a real estate agent like us can be a huge help when it comes to finding and buying a home in the Bronx. A good agent will be able to guide you through the process and help you find properties that meet your needs and budget.

By taking these steps now, our clients can set themselves up for success for buying a home in the Bronx in the new year. If you’re thinking about buying a home, we encourage you to consider these steps and reach out to us if you have any questions or need guidance. We’re here to help make the home buying process as smooth and successful as possible.
