* Ah, the ironies of life…. While 29 million Americans play golf, more than 324 million Americans use the internet or services reliant on data centers: U.S. golf courses consume roughly 350-530 billion gallons of water annually, whereas U.S. data centers directly consume about 17 billion gallons annually…..
* “Main Street Millionaires” have an average net worth of $25 million, and as a group, they commanded $54.8 trillion in 2022. That’s more than 13 times the collective wealth that year of the billionaires on the Forbes 400 list, but there are over 3 million of them, not 400…… (NY TIMES)
* I asked AI: Why are home builders not subject to the “laws of Zillow”? Answer: The primary driver behind the exemption is financial. Zillow aggregates resale home data for free via automated MLS feeds, using that traffic to sell leads to real estate agents. Builders operate on a completely separate, paid commercial model: Through products like Zillow’s Promoted Communities platform, home builders pay Zillow substantial advertising fees to push their proprietary “New Home Feed” directly onto the site. Zillow has zero incentive to restrict or ban these listings because builders are premium enterprise advertising clients who pay directly to broadcast their floorplans, developments, and lots. Traditional brokerages view this as a double standard, but to Zillow, it is a matter of corporate classification. Zillow views brokerages as joint-venture market participants whose data rules must be standardized to prevent hoarding, while it views home builders as product manufacturers operating on a standard, direct-to-consumer commercial advertising contract.
Mortgage Rate Updates:

The US 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 7.28% as of October 1, 2026, the highest level since November 2023, up from 7.03% the previous week and 6.34% a year earlier. The housing market continues to be supported by favorable economic conditions as mortgage rates remain elevated, Freddie Mac Chief Economist Sam Khater said. The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.60%, up from 6.42% a week earlier.
